Procedure for Thali Tying Ritual in Tamil Vanniyar Kula Kshatriyar Weddings
The event that finalises the marriage between the groom and his bride in the Vanniyar Kula Kshatriyar, is the Thali tying ritual. The Thali is purified with prayers and special poojas. It is made of gold, weighing around half a sovereign. There are attractive gold beads on either side of the Thali. It is attached to a yellow thread, that has been immersed in turmeric water and dried.

The bridegroom ties the thali around the bride's neck. His sister holds a divine lamp called the Kamakshi vilaku, which is believed to signify the presence of Goddess Parvati. While the ritual is going on, divine music from the conch and flute are played in the background. This is a practice to eliminate evil omens from the wedding venue. It also adds to the serenity of the occasion.

Once the bridegroom has tied the Thali, the elders proceed to bless the couple abundantly. The bride's maternal uncle places a gold pattam on his beloved niece's forehead. This displays the position an Uncle holds in the life of Vanniyar girls. The maternal uncle is given great respect and is consulted for his approval in every decision regarding his niece.

Tamil Vanniayar weddings are conducted beautifully and are rich in cultural traditions. The atmosphere is heavenly, as the music, the chanting, and the happiness of the new couple fills everyone with renewed hope and positivity.
